OVER 5000 LIVES SAVED!

Wednesday, October 11: Ay Chihuahua! Anyone else out there have whelping puppies in a carrier on your lap while driving back from animal services today on your 2023 bingo card? Yeah, me and MamaJan didn’t either, yet, there we were. Bingo and bonus achievement unlocked. Woohoo!

Today was a big day for FLDR. We didn’t really plan for it to be, but in rescue, we can’t really plan much in advance, we just have to be ready to roll. Just over 14 years ago, FLDR had just formed as an “official” rescue ~ a group of humans dedicated to saving the left overs, the left behinds, the ones that needed us the most. We vowed to always put the dogs and their needs first ~ even if it made humans mad at us. Our very first rescue pup was a young bichon mix - matted to the skin, barely able to see through the matts - ears matted to his head, a hot mess and FLDR type of pup for sure. We rescued him from Polk County Animal Control and my daughter Cait named him Jacob. Pup #1 for FLDR. Fast forward to last night, as I was entering new puppers into our database and the final pup was #4999. I texted MamaJan and Debra that the next pup we took in would be #5000! The fact that such a huge milestone was about to hit hadn’t even had a chance to sink in before a plea from a shelter manager came in - an overfull shelter had just taken in a lot of pups from a single home, one being a mama about to give birth at any moment, along with 3 teeny tiny puppies barely eating solid food, more pups with very bad skin issues - could we help any of them? I mean, MamaJan didn’t even have to be asked twice to drop everything she had planned for today (after already doing that yesterday to save two other pups on an urgent plea) to sign up for a field trip. But let’s be honest here….MamaJan just had to hear the word “chihuahua” and there was no way she wasn’t going, LOL! After scrambling to plan and prep for new pups, it began to sink in that today we would rescue dog #5000 from the same shelter FLDR rescued it’s first pup - from the same amazing shelter manager who put her trust in us so long ago to do the right thing by the pups entrusted to us to care for. Of course MamaJan and I should never be left unattended on a shelter trip - because we always leave with extras, which today included the three teeny tiny pups and six other chihuahua mixes from the same home AND when Debra has access to the listings of all the pups at the shelter - we leave with extra extras - which in pure kismet - included pup #5001 - a white fluffy male poodley/bichon mix - so much like Pup#1 Jacob.

Pup #5000 is now safe and snuggled in at MamaJan’s…after quite an interesting drive home, as when they told us she was “about to pop” they really meant it - as MamaJan spent the drive back with a carrier in her lap whelping six puppies! What a party, right? I-4 in heavy traffic, pouring rain and a momma delivering puppies in a Jeep full of other “fragrant” smelling pups. Rescue is never boring, that is for sure. Since the car ride back was quite a party, new mama, pup #5000, is now lovingly named Fiesta, as today is a celebration in more ways than one for us, and her:)

Obviously, we have a lot of new pups to care for, all of whom will need extra vet care (and a $497 stop at Petsmart on the way home already for emergency puppy food and supplies! Gulp!) Just $5 on a Friday can mane it a Fri-YAY for so many pups out there…..If every single one of our social media fans just donated $5, we wouldn't have to ask for any help for an entire year! However, with FB wanting us to pay to boost posts, and then restricting how many people see our subsequent posts unless we pay for them too, less than 10% of our fans actually see each post, making it even harder to sustain ourselves through the summer. Please, if you can, lend a helping paw. Your donation will be literally allowing us to catch up and resume saving lives. Lives that are counting on us, because there is no one else. Winnie, a Chihuahua mix

Meet Winnie! Winnie is a 1 year old female Chihuahua mix and she weighs about 5 pounds. Winnie arrived in rescue after being taken to animal services from a home with way too many dogs. She has done a great job settling into foster care and is ready to find a forever home to call her own. Her foster dad says, "Winnie is an extremely sweet and loving girl that is a total joy. She loves people and other dogs of all sizes. Here in her foster home her bestie is Ella my Great Dane. Winnie is not an annoying little barker, just a lover. Winnie is crate trained and walks pretty good on a leash. She does well with her housetraining and is happy to go out if you ask. This little lady is a total love! But because of her size it would be best if there weren’t small children around. She has not been around cats, but loves other dogs." Winnie is spayed, up to date on vaccines, heartworm negative and microchipped. She is fostered in the Orlando area and her adoption donation is $375.

FOSTERS NEEDED!!

FLDR wants to save as many puppers as we possibly can and the only way to do this is by YOU joining our team!! We need fosters!! If you live in the Orlando area and would like to help save lives, we want you to join our pack! We are in need of foster homes willing to open their hearts and make a space on the couch for a rescued pup, usually just for a couple of weeks! We take care of the vetting, grooming, medications and you provide the love and snuggles! Please complete the "Adoption Application" and just put in the comments - "Want to Foster" and a Foster Coordinator will reach out to you right away!

We are also in need of people willing to do transports, usually from Winter Haven to St. Cloud or from north Orlando to St. Cloud a couple of times a month, during a weekday. Please email littledogrescue@gmail.com for more info on helping with Freedom Rides!

Please help us save dogs on Death Row at local Animal Controls. These are dogs that can't be adopted out directly from Animal Control, mainly for medical reasons. When they can't be adopted, they need a rescue to save them when their time runs out. These pups desperately need our help, we are their last hope!

Florida Little Dog Rescue Group rescues dogs from all over the state of Florida, but our main focus is the Central Florida area. Our volunteers live anywhere from Tallahassee to Tampa, but all of our dogs are fostered in the Orlando area. We are 100% volunteer-based, which means no overhead or salary costs. Your donation is used directly for dog care. We do not receive government funds. We are entirely supported by charitable donations.

We ensure that each dog is spayed/neutered, vaccinated, tested for heartworms and other parasites, examined by a vet and treated for any known conditions prior to adoption. All known medical information is fully disclosed to new families. While awaiting adoption, the dogs live in foster homes that provide love, patience and TLC to the pups! A pup's stay in foster care could vary from several days to several weeks, depending upon the dog's conditions and needs. Unlike shelter or kennel living, fostering the pups in a home environment allows us to personally evaluate each dog for behavior and temperament issues. We are able to see how they interact and react to other animals and children, if they are house trained, like to go for walks, play ball, etc. and that makes it easier to know what type of home/family would be best suited for them!

Please note, we are not a shelter. We do not have a kennel or facility that you can visit and see all the dogs. Each dog is fostered in an individual home. We do rescue out of our private homes and in our spare time. So, you cannot come visit our dogs until you have gone through the application and interview process and we have contacted you about scheduling a visit. We do not have set "hours" and we answer all calls and emails as quickly as we can!
